Tony Coleman

Anthony "Tony" Coleman is an English former footballer who made 250 appearances in the Football League
playing for Tranmere Rovers, Preston North End, Doncaster Rovers, Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool
, Southport
and Stockport County. He played on the left wing.
He started his career at Stoke City, where he failed to make the grade and moved into non-league playing for Ellesmere Port Town
. Whilst there, local league club Tranmere Rovers noticed him and signed him in October 1962 and after only eight games in two seasons, moved up two divisions to sign for Preston North End. He did not stay long at Deepdale
before moving back into non-league with Welsh
side Bangor City in the Cheshire County League
. But again did not dwell in non-league for too long before being signed by Fourth Division Doncaster Rovers in November 1965, where he became an important member of their Championship winning side.
Joe Mercer
signed him for Manchester City in March 1967 and consequently Doncaster suffered as a result and spiralled back down to Division Four. Whilst at Maine Road
, Coleman won League Championship
and FA Cup
winners medals, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in October 1969, which was less than successful as Wednesday were relegated to start their downfall to Division Three
. This was followed by a spell at Blackpool
, before Coleman emigrated to South Africa
and then to return to England to see out his playing days at Southport
, Stockport County and Macclesfield Town.
In November 2009, an interview with Coleman was broadcast on Manchester City football show Blue Tuesday on BBC Manchester
in which he spoke about his life in Australia
and revealed that he intended to raise money by selling his football medals.
