Tondiarpet constitutes an important suburban region of Chennai city. The place is located in the northern outskirts and close to the nearby sea that is Bay of Bengal
. Tondiarpet is one important commercial centre in the north of the city. The place shares its boundaries with other important regions of Chennai including the city center, George Town. The extensive road and railway networks connects this suburban region with the rest of the city.
This area gets its name from a famous seventeenth century Muslim Saint "Kunangudi Masthan Sahib". Kunangudi is his birthplace located near Thondi in Ramanathapuram District
. He meditated in a place known as "Lebbai Kaadu" in Chennai. The locals called him "Thondiar", meaning "Man hailing from Thondi". Later, Lebbai Kaadu came to be known as Tondiarpet. Hazarath Kunangudi Masthan Sahib Dargah located in Royapuram

The place has got its railway station, grounded within the suburban area, called Tondiarpet Railway Station.
