Timor Timur was the official Indonesia
n name of present-day East Timor
, during its occupation between 1975 and 1999. The occupation was international not accepted.
declared its independence on 28th November 1975, calling itself Timor-Leste (Portuguese for "East Timor"). Nine days later, Indonesia began the invasion of its main territory. Indonesia declared the accession of Timor-Leste on 17th July 1976 as 27th province and changed its official name to the Indonesian translation of East Timor: Timor Timur. Portuguese was forbidden to use in Timor Timur, because it was seen as relict of colonization time.
The Indonesian left in 1999. Timor Timur came under administration of United Nations.
After the re-establishment of the independence of Timor-Leste in 2002, the East Timorese gouvernment requested, that in international use, the name of East Timor should be Timor-Leste. The only other official translation is Timor Loro'sae, which is Tetum for East Timor. The reason is to avoid the Indonesian term, which is generally connected with the dreadful time of occupation.
