While the station is at the terminus of the Thurso Branch, it is not the operational end of the Far North Line. The train, after arriving at Thurso, goes back to , before heading east for , the terminus.

In the past, the four car train would split in half at Georgemas, with one half going to Wick, and the other to Thurso. Prior to the introduction of multiple unit trains, a locomotive would be based at Georgemas Junction to take the Thurso portion to and from the junction.
