in 1852, became interested in mining and the transportation of ores and was president of the Morris and Essex Railroad
. Randolph was elected as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly
in 1859 and served in the New Jersey Senate
from 1862 to 1863. He was elected Governor of New Jersey
, serving in office from 1869 to 1872.
Randolph was elected as a Democrat
to the United States Senate
and served from March 4, 1875 to March 4, 1881. In the Senate, he was chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs in the Forty-sixth United States Congress.
Randolph invented a stitching machine and a steam typewriter.
Randolph died in Morristown
