. It was founded on 8th December 1860 and has been in continuous publication since. Its offices are based in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire, England and the newspaper's editor for the past 15 years has been Joseph Kelly, who is also the company's Managing Director.

The Universe also publishes the Catholic Times, Catholic Life, Catholic Companion, Who's Who in Catholic Life, Church Building magazine, Novena, Vatican past and Present, From the Catholic Archives and a range of other third party Catholic titles.

In 2010 it was the official publisher and distributor for a number of UK papal visit publications and resources, including Heart to Heart (200,000 copies), Welcome Pope Benedict, the Official Magnificat Papal Mass book (one million copies) and the official papal visit DVD.
