Following the successful chart performances of previous singles "The Boy Is Mine
" with Brandy
," the song was released on July 7, 1998 as the album's second single. "The First Night" became one of Monica's biggest successes in years, topping both U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, becoming Monica's first chart solo topper.
A remix version with rapper and also producer Jermaine "JD" Dupri
and R.O.C. appeared on Monica's 1999 CD single Angel of Mine
. The Jermaine "JD" Dupri-produced song was released on his hit collection Y'all Know What This Is... The Hits in 2007.

In the music video, Monica is seen dancing in a tight, white top and long khaki pants with a crowd of dancers. Throughout the video, there are cuts of Monica standing up in a white dress & sitting down on a long couch holding a camera.
