In 1970, Tengku Sulaiman was proclaimed "Tengku Panglima Besar Selangor". In 1978, he received the title "Tengku Panglima Diraja Selangor", which he continues to hold today.

After he returned to Malaysia in 1970, Tengku Sulaiman began venturing into the construction sector. He and other partners founded SP Setia

He is married to the Tunku Puteri of Johor, Tunku Kamariah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah (born 11 July 1956), the eldest daughter of the late Sultan of Johor, Sultan Iskandar.
