 ceremony that was established in 1981, showcased female entertainers who achieved accolades, recognition, high record sales or a big fan base. The Tejano Music Awards honors several other categories which are presented at the ceremony annually to "honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position".

Selena first entered the award in 1986, and continued to win the award for ten consecutive years (twice posthumous after her death). During the 30th Tejano Music Awards in 2010, Selena was awarded "Best 1980s Female Vocalist", and "Best 1990s Female Vocalist".
