The TUU was heavily involved in the successful campaign to defeat Commonwealth Voluntary Student Unionism proposals in 1999. However, VSU legislation was later passed by the Australian Parliament in 2005, which saw the end of the Student Association and the TUU encompassing all University of Tasmania students.

The TUU is jointly governed by a Student Representative Council and a Board of Management.

Sports Clubs and Societies

The TUU has over 30 affiliated sports clubs and over 80 affiliated non-sporting societies. Despite the introduction of voluntary student unionism resulting in major cuts to direct funding available to these groups, the TUU continues to provide asset and accident insurance, assistance by means of an employed Sports and Societies Officer and convenes monthly Sports Councils and Societies Councils, chaired by the TUU Sports and Societies Councils President. The Councils President is the common president of both councils and workes with an Executive Committee that the Councils elect within their own number. The Councils President is elected by direct election of the student body.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

, the size of the committee and its financial budget have both been significantly reduced. Furthermore, the amalgimation has seen separate councils in the southern, northern and cradle Coast campuses that meet periodically. The councils are overseen by the Vice-President of that particular region. In addition, some positions have two or more representatives for their partiular region.

Board of Management (BoM)

The Board of Management is a committee composed of representatives elected from the student body and appointees by the University of Tasmania's University Council. The Board is responsible for administering the commercial and business services of The Union and under the current structure students retain a majority of one on BoM, ensuring student autonomy in the governance of the student organisation.

The Current positions are:
  • Chair of The Board (usually a Uni Council appointee acts in this capacity)
  • Deputy Chair of The Board (usually the President of The Union acts in this capacity)
  • President of The Union
  • Treasurer of The Union
  • Secretary of The Union
  • Board of Management Representative on Executive (must be an elected student rep who does not already sit on Executive)

Executive Committee (Exec)

The Executive Committee is the Joint-Standing Committee of the SRC and BoM and as such makes decisions in the absence of a meeting of either body (or both). All decisions of Executive must be ratified by the relevant body, depending on the type of decision made.

Three core representatives are directly elected to Executive Committee by virtue of their position and following this, the SRC and BoM both internally elect from within themselves a representative to Exec.
