According to forecast.id Tarneit's population in 2006 was 7,613, it is estimated to be 19,435 in 2011 and 63,512 in 2031 a rapid increase of 8.9 percent or 55,899 persons.

It is an emerging suburb in the City Of Wyndham and a sister suburb to next door Truganina.

History

Tarneit was established as a grazing area. Tarneit Post Office opened on 8 March 1888, closed in 1895, reopened in 1902 and closed again in 1943.

Land use

Tarneit is mostly used as agricultural grazing land, but this is changing due to urban sprawl coming from nearby suburbs, such as Hoppers Crossing and Werribee, happening mostly in the southern region of Tarneit.

Tarneit already has a secondary school within its boundaries, known as Thomas Carr and a prep-yr9 Baden Powell College in Rose Grange Estate. A lot of residential growth is occurring in the Thomas Carr district, with other schools and shopping centres planned for construction. Wyndham Village Shopping centre, in the suburb's south, was completed in 2005 to serve the exploding population in the immediate area, especially in the residential developments of Tarneit Gardens, The Rise, Rose Grange and Seasons. Existing Bus Routes in the area have recently been altered and now better serve the suburb.

In the next ten years, Tarneit and other suburbs such as Truganina are expected to grow rapidly as more established City of Wyndham suburbs are exhausted for land space.

Housing estates

The Tarneit area is now the site of several new housing estates, including The Reflections Estatehttp://www.reflectionsestate.com.au/,Moorookylehttp://www.moorookyle.com.au, Tarneit Gardenshttp://www.tarneitgardens.com.au, The Risehttp://www.therise.com.au, Claremont Park and Rose Grange,"The Heartlands"[www.theheartlands.com.au]. Mooted estates include Evadenehttp://www.evadene.com.au (located within Claremont Park). By contrast with the number and scale of private estate developments in Tarneit, public housing remains underprovisioned.

to Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing. It is planned to ease traffic congestion on Sayers Road, which services Hoppers Crossing commuters travelling to and from the city. During peak hour the road is often a traffic nightmare for locals.

In 2010, the Wyndham bus network was extensively upgraded and now caters for commuters from Tarneit.

trains from the Werribee line has been confirmed.

The improvement of road infrastructure has not kept pace due the rapid development of Tarneit and the government's failure to provide the necessary investment. There are several black spot intersections in need of urgent safety upgrades. During May 2010 four people were killed in two separate fatal collisions. Local member 'Tim from Tarneit' Pallas is the responsible Minister but he has been of little help to constituents.

The new Tarneit rail station will be built along Leakes Rd and provide a much faster rail route then current Werribee services which must pass though Altona and Footscray. This will ensure Tarneit becomes a prime regional area for those who commute to the city on a regular basis.

Work will start in 2010 on the A new school in Tarneit. Tarneit College as it will be known will provide from grades 10-12 in stage one with construction due to be complete by 2012.

Islamic College of Melbourne (ICOM) located at Wootten Road commenced its classes from grade 1 to grade 4 in February 2011. There are expansion plans to grade 8 by 2012 in a 24 classroom campus with building construction commencing in April 2011.
