in 1934. He graduated from the Department of economics of the Osaka University
in 1957. After graduation, he joined a company. While working at this company, he wrote short novels and applied them to the various concours taken by the commercial magazines of literatures.
In 1960, he joined in SF Fanzine Uchuu-jin. In 1961, he won the Fine Story prize in the 1st Kuusou-Kagaku Shousetsu Contest (later, Hayakawa SF Contest) by his short novel Kakyuu Idea-Man and made debut in the S-F Magazine by this work.
In 1963, he retired from the company and started working as an independent novelist. Mayumura published his first book, long SF novel, Moeru Keisha from Touto Shobo in this year. In 1979, he won the 7th Izumi Kyōka Prize for Literature
(JA) and the Seiun Award
by his long novel Shoumetsu no Kourin, which is the representative work in his Shiseikan series. In 1996, he won his second Seiun Award by his long novel Hikishio no Toki, which is also a story in his Shiseikan series.
He adovocated the In-Sider Bungaku-ron (Theory of Literatures by In-Siders), which insisted the possibility of literatures by In-Siders in contrast with the traditional literatures by Out-Siders . The theme of his novels are very often the problems and relations between organizations such as corporation or bureucracy and individual person.
Mayumura is also a well-known Juvenile Fiction writer. His representative works in this field are Nazo no Tenkousei and Nerawareta Gakuen etc. These works were adapted into TV Dramas
series in the NHK
, and adapted into Cinema too. His other Juvenile fictions were adapted into anime
(Toki no Tabibito).
In 2002, his wife died of cancer. Mayumura had been writing a very short story every day for his wife, who was in the hospital bedridden since the cancer had been diagnosed. When his stories, which were written each day and numbered, reached to 1778, his wife passed away. These stories were compiled and published.
Based on this real story of Mayumura and his wife, a movie was made in 2009 and released. The cinema Boku to Tsuma no 1778 no Monogatari
was released in 2011.
As of 2011, Mayumura is a professor of the Graduate School of Osaka University of Arts

- In the far future, the Terrestrial Humans constitute the Terrestrial Federation in the space. The Terrestrial humans had spread in the vast space and colonized numerous stellar systems and their planets. The terrestrials had established the local governments in those planets and ruled terrestrial people and intellectual tribes who had been originally born, evolved and lived in those planets before terrestrials conquered these planets. In the early period, the planets had been ruled by military governments. However, the Federal Government started to send civilian administrators and they reigned planets on behalf of military governors. Thus the dramas of those administrators (shiseikan) began.
