Village Elementary school was visited by politician Hillary Clinton in 1999, giving a speech to the school's students in the gym / theater area. She followed up her appearance with a personal tour of the White House for the 5th grade class of 1999 on their field trip to Washington DC. The class was thrilled to have the privilage to walk through the Rose Garden.
Village Elementary School was recognized as a 2006 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Village Elementary School was one of only fourteen schools in New York State to receive this recognition. In the 1992-1993 school year The Syosset High School was recognized as a U. S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Harry B. Thompson Middle School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1996-1997. South Woods Middle School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1999-2000. Approximately 6,800 students were enrolled in the district as of 2006.
This district specializes in the arts with well recognized programs in art, voice, cooking, dance, theatre, band, orchestra, and photography. Syosset schools participate it county and state programs for voice and art. It also has 2008 state 3rd place winners in National History Day state competitions as well as first place prizes in regionals. It also has an intensive mandatory foreign language program with 1st grade-Mandarin, 2nd grade-French, 3rd grade-Spanish, 4th grade-Italian, 5th grade-Latin, and students pick Spanish, Italian or French on grades 6-12.
