It was founded in 1950, which makes it one of the oldest LGBT rights organizations in the world. It has currently about 6,000 members (2004) and has 28 regional offices spread over the country. Pioneer members in the 1950s include Allan Hellman (1904–1982) and Eric Thorsell (1899–1980).

RFSL was a major lobbyist for gender-neutral marriage, a goal that was reached in April 2009 after 50 years of working with that specific issue.

In July 2007, RFSL received official NGO status at the United Nations
