, they are offspring of Vishwakarma. Their main occupation is wood carpentry. The community is vegetarian and avoid drinking. There are about 1444 clans.

According to myth sutradhar (sutra=formulae or mantra, slokas, chants and sutradhar is that who use formula). In ancient times sutradhars were working with sutra for every part of the building. Once god Acharya Vishwakarma went to see the work of his pupil on the site, pupil did mistake, he forgot to place the doors & window in nervousness. He placed opening with hand(manual).after seeing this Acharya crushed (shraap) him that "from now onwards you will work with hand(manual) only ".

Later on building construction started with hand. Our historical resources shows that suthar are the resident of gujrat, rajsthan, maharastra and sindh Pakistan prone and they are originally shilpi (stone carver) and builders of temple and forts but later started in practicing in carpentry as work demand in the society. the original carpenter are the jangid people which was very less in number so shilpi joined the hand with them to develop balance of this society work. The khati also claimed themselves as jangid and suthar status. The originality and their settlement and name originality have not mentioned in any Hindu or vedic traditional resources, the "khati" words originate from the "khat" which means wood and khat words belongs to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

It's not originated in India but the khati people were very sharp in talent, smart and extraordinary talented as like jangid and suthar with their fine beviour slowly they mingled in the suthar and jangid.

It's not same aryan race but adopted the aryan faiths later as like other tribes in rajput, Jat and Muslim and some of the original khati tribes in maharashtra regions history. Still do not worship their eshth dev Lords Vishwakrma and khati subjected with untouchable as long periods, according to Haryana cast history time is not mentioned, these people are outsiders and came to steal in the village they were settled in the village, where khat (garbage) had put.

They chose this garbage place to live because of the social system and outsiders of the village. So name originated as khati.

Even in Rajsthan like Jodhpur and all other region they were not allowed to stand equals to the suthar of those regions but later they start family relation and they started marrying with in khati and suthar and few khati changed their surname by giving bribes to bahi bhat, bahi bhats are the genealogist and data recorder of family data, bahi bhat help them to mingle in suthar and change their data and caste in suthar. According to the living suthar of that jodhpur region.

The logical question is this: "Why the Carpenter only have surname suterdhar?" Carpenter are never used words suterdhar. It's used for the stone carver he was first creative man who made tools with stones and started living in caves. ll other people were shot and they are brahman. Logically it make some sense, the carpenter is raced from the stone carver shilpi awarded with sutradhar "suthar" because the development of human civilization is through discovery of wooden wheel which discovered by carpenter aadimanva.

The archeology evidence and historian describes that our human civilization started different ages like Stone Age (early aadi manva was in forest and first use tools made with stone and started living in caves), Wooden ages (vedic ages are described as wooden ages were he use boat making, wooden wheel and agricultural wooden plough start living in villages), Iron Age (man started using tools with iron and metal and man became superior to all creature by developing weapons and his growth rate is more faster) and finally pottery ages. Sone carver and carpenter they exchanged their works as per age demands to work them.

The jointery of cave architecture in India is similar like vedic villages so the same skilled work in stone and wood were developed by the same people. So sutradhar words first used for the stone carver and the same stone carver developed in carpentry skill so they kept it continuous through the ages for all other later discovery. That's why can say These people excelled in carpentry work also these people have excellent talent of hand-work.

In sanwat 989 (about 1072 years back) at Sidhpur Patan Gujarat was ruled by King Jaysingh S/O Haresingh solanki. He was seriously ill of Leprosy (korrh) and when He was not cured with medical treatment, finally persuaded The Pundits and Jyotishi for any other way, and Pundit Varun has suggested that he can be cured if a Mander (Temple) “Maha Ruderalya” of Shiva Bhagwan “RUDER” (this temple's ruins and history is still exist, later destroyed by Muslim invaders as per archeology is constructed through the wans of Shri Vishvakarmaji.
King has asked the Devpalji Bhatt to go Kashipuri, and Mathurapuri where Vishwakarma community was settled to call Vishwakarma Community also widely announced that wherever the community of Vishvikarma is settled they should join hand in the construction work on Temple and also offered good emoluments against their work.

So the work for construction of Rudermal Mander has started by Suterdhar Brahmans and some other and after good-long period a very beautiful Temple “Mha Ruderalia” was constructed under the management of Gangadevji Jangid. When the Mandir was successfully completed, and King was cured of illness, then King has granted various prizes to all the working persons, and asked the Vishwakarma community to settle in Gujarat, but Shri Dharpal Padva has requested the King that our community in Gujarat is short in number, we will feel difficulty for marriage etc. thereafter King asked them to join the Shilpi who participated in the work for construction of Temple.

The suggestions of king was accepted and after adopting the proper Shudhi process samaj isthapna was made and 120 goats were completed as 4 Aadoo (Original) goats of Vishwakarma from rishi wans, 4 Son of Aadoo goats and 112 goats from other communities who performed the work process were accepted.

First of all the “SHUDHI” process of khitri wans was made and then these Brahman Khitries were accepted in the Vishwakarma Community, hence all these persons accepted in the Vishwakarma wans has withdrawn their original cost and accepted/adopted the rules/customs of Vishwakarma Brahman community. (As a son of Jaisinghji solanki named Oadsingh has accepted Vishwakarma community and goat odhana was made, where as other goats were named as the name of person adopted the community).

The above information is taken from Vishvikarma Mahapuran, Shri Vishvikarma wans Parkash, Bikaner Vishvikarma samaj nirdeshka 1996, and with the help of some friends. The most of information is based on the genealogist local called bahi bhaat of ghanchi clan from Rajote city in Pali district Rajasthan if you have any doubt you can personally visit to them.
