Smart grew up in Salt Lake City as the youngest of seven girls. She is a Latter-day Saint and started acting in Junior High School, and later went on to play her first lead roles while attending Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah. The Summer after graduating high school, she was employed as an musical entertainment performer at Lagoon Park in Farmington, Utah. She received a BFA in music, dance, theatre from Brigham Young University
