The Stockholm urban area is the largest and most populous of the statistical localities or urban areas in Sweden
. It has no administrative function of its own, but constitutes a continuous multimunicipal built-up area, which extends into 11 municipalities
in Stockholm County
. It contains the municipal seats of 10 of those. The population at the end of 2005 was 1.25 million. Stockholm urban area is not the same as Metropolitan Stockholm , which is a much larger area.
As of December 31, 2005, the population in the Stockholm urban area was 1,252,020 inhabitants, the land area 377.3 km² (145.68 sq mi), and the population density
3,318.36 inh/km² (8,594.53 inh/sq mi).
