In 1987 he began as White's backup, but took the starting job in week 10. In 1988 he started 14 of the 16 games, and led the Cowboys in passing by passing for 3,139 yards and 17 touchdowns, but the Cowboys finished just 3-13 (3-11 in his starts), and Pelluer's career as a Cowboy was over. Pelluer spent the 1989 season as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs
