, Oxford. He returned to teach at Loughborough from 1970–1993, serving variously as Assistant History Master, 1970–1987; Junior Housemaster, 1976–1979; Head of General Studies, 1983–87 and Head of History, 1987–1993. In 1993 he was appointed Deputy Headmaster of Birkenhead School
. In 1996 he became headmaster of Bedford Modern School
, holding that position until his retirement in 2009.
Smith was chairman of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference
Sports Sub-Committee between 1998 and 2008, and was a founder and Committee Member of the Forum of Independent Day Schools (FIDS). He is currently a governor of Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School
