In 2005, following the bankruptcy of Torino and the consequent release of all of their players, Sorrentino found himself without a team, and opted to leave Italy, joining Greece
's AEK Athens in a free transfer. After the birth of his daughter, Sorrentino asked AEK president Demis Nikolaidis
to let him return to Italy because his wife was not feeling comfortable enough in Greece. However, no ideal offer was made, and Sorrentino made it clear that if he had to stay in Greece, he would be 100% professional. Fans of AEK respected that, and chanted his name in every game. He had a top-notch performance versus Milan
, in a UEFA Champions League
match. AEK won 1–0, with Sorrentino was named the "Man of the Match"; his performance led to some interest from several Italian and European clubs.
On July 2007, AEK agreed to loan the keeper to La Liga
's Recreativo Huelva
for the 2007–08 season, with an option for the Spanish club to sign him on a full basis. Sorrentino was the first-choice throughout the whole season
, playing all 38 league games, as Recreativo avoided relegation. However, the club did not exercise the option and Sorrentino was eventually able to come back to Italy, being loaned to Chievo
, who had just been promoted to Serie A
. After a good first season, Sorrentino signed a permanent deal with Chievo on 12 June 2009.
On 30 June 2010, Chievo was reported to have agreed with Genoa
to swap Sorrentino for striker Riccardo Meggiorini
, as well as signing Brazilian Rubinho
as their new goalkeeper. However, the deal collapsed as Meggiorini moved to Bologna.
