Star Trek XII is a planned film sequel to 2009's Star Trek currently untitled and in the pre-production stages. The sci-fi action film is scheduled to enter production in January 2012 and is due to be directed by J.J. Abrams.

 for a sequel. It was reported in March 2009 that the five had been signed as producers for the film with the script to be written again by Orci and Kurtzman with Lindelof joining the writing team.  later stated that these reports were untrue. Writer Lindelof, who is also a producer, compared the sequel to The Dark Knight

. Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci stated that selecting a villain was hard, with Abrams citing that "The universe Roddenberry created is so vast that it's hard to say one particular thing stands out". The interview also saw them discuss the possibility of Khan and Klingons. Khan was officially ruled out of the sequel in October with confirmation that a character from the original series will appear, albeit not a traditional one. Kurtzman and Lindelof stated that they have "broken the story" and rather than being a sequel, it will act as a stand alone film. However, Abrams admitted in December that there was still no script.

In January 2011, Abrams, who still wasn't attached to direct, stated he hasn't decided about whether or not he's directing the sequel, citing that he still hasn't seen a script. Paramount Pictures

, stated in an interview that he believed filming would begin in the fall. Abrams stated he would be putting the film's story and characters before the release date. In September, Abrams officially signed on to direct the film, with the cast from the previous film reprising their respective roles and that a Winter 2012 or Summer 2013 release date intended. In October, Orci reported that location scouting was underway and a series of comic books, which Orci will act as creative director, will "foreshadow" the film. The film was given a revised release date and pushed to a 2013 slot. The film is set to begin production on January 15, 2012, with a scheduled release date of May 17, 2013. The film is due to be released in 3D.

J. J. Abrams has stated that as opposed to numerous past Trek films, this film will have a subtitle as opposed to a number following the series title Star Trek.
