Stanton Street Synagogue

The Stanton Street Synagogue, also known as Stanton Street Shul, Congregation Bnai Jacob Anschei Brzezan, or Congregation Bnai Joseph Anschei Brzezan, is a historic synagogue located on Manhattan's Lower East Side
.
The synagogue, located at 180 Stanton Street, was built in 1913 by a landsmanschaft from the town of Brzezan in southeast Galicia (now in the Ukraine
). It is one of the few surviving tenement synagogues. The synagogue was almost closed in 2000.
Rabbi Joseph Singer, hailing from the town of Pilzno in Galicia, served as the rabbi for 58 years.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
in 2002.
The congregation is now working to restore the building.
According to Stanton Synagogue board member Elissa Sampson, “If someone wanted a really gorgeous suburban synagogue, they wouldn’t be coming here. What they get is something haimish, homelike, something real and.. familiar… a piece of the old country.”
The current Rabbi is Joshua Yuter
