Stakhanov is a city

. The city is designated as its own separate raion
(district) within the oblast.
The current estimated population is around 90,152 (as of 2001).
miner Alexey Stakhanov, who started his career there. Today no one really remembers the name of the settlement before the Soviet Union. Some say that there used to be a village of Lozova Pavlivka, the birthplace of Volodymyr Sosiura. From 1937 to 1940 the city was named Sergo , and before 1937 and from 1940 to 1978 the city was known as Kadievka , or Ukrainian Kadiyivka . A labor camp for German prisoners of war was established at Stakhanov during the Second World War.
