History

The school opened in September 1990 on a temporary site where John Cabot Catholic Secondary School

 is now located. After two years, the staff and students moved into the permanent building, near the corner of Bristol and Hurontario. As part of the Dufferin-Peel portable replacement plan, the school received a three floor, twenty-two room addition which was completed in June 2001. Recently, with further growth of the school, more portables have been added to the school; 5 in 2006, 5 more in 2007, and 1 more in 2009. Beginning with incoming grade 9s in September, 2010, the school will introduce a cap. This is designed to eventually reduce the size of the school to 1950 students in 4 to 5 years.

Construction of Saviour of the World Chinese Catholic Church started during the 2002/03 school year, the Church now shares property with the school.

Sports

The St. Francis Xavier Tigers have many sports teams and clubs. Teams include (boys and girls except where otherwise noted) Football (boys senior & boys junior), wrestling (varsity), hockey (varsity boys and girls), cross-country running (senior, junior & midget), golf (varsity), basketball (senior & junior), volleyball (senior & junior), cricket (varsity boys), soccer (senior & junior), rugby (varsity girls and boys), track & field (senior, junior & midget), baseball (boys varsity), fast pitch softball (girls varsity), tennis (senior & junior), curling (senior boys & senior mixed), and badminton (senior & junior).
The school is also well known in GTA basketball circles for the three Rimrocker basketball tournaments it hosts every year. It hosts a 16-team Senior Girls Rimrocker tournament the first week after Thanksgiving, a 16-team Senior Boys Rimrocker tournament the final week before Christmas, and a 32-team Junior Boys Rimrocker tournament the second week of January. The junior boys tournament is one of the largest and most prestigious junior boys basketball tournaments in Ontario.

The Music program at Xavier currently involves over 250 students a year. There are many different ensembles that perform at Xavier which include:

The bands have won various awards from many festivals locally, such OBA Concert Band Festival, and internationally, such as Heritage Festivals in the US.

School clubs

St. Francis has a variety of school clubs including Avant Garde - the school magazine, robotics club, computer club, yearbook committee, DECA, Environmental Intelligence, Gamers Club, STORM, xFactor, FX Players, and Radio FX.

Other activities

Every second year, the school hosts Relay For Life to raise money for the Canadian Cancer society. Other school events include the ShareLife walk, Cafe Night, Three For Five Theatre, Fx Music concerts, the school play, Unity Live, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, and the Christmas hamper drive.
