Construction of the plant began in 1970 with the first reactor unit coming on-line in 1977, followed by the second unit in 1981. The plant is named after the former President and Chief Executive Officer of both Alabama Power and Southern Nuclear, Joseph McConnell Farley. It is the only nuclear plant wholly owned by Southern Company or by one of its subsidiaries.
