Marching Band

Southern Nash High School’s marching band has also been nationally recognized. Since 2002, the Marching Firebirds have placed first or second overall in majority of their competitions. Elements such as music, marching, drum major, percussion, color guard, visual ensemble, and general performance are judged in these competitions. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, the Marching Firebirds placed 3rd nationally in their class.
The Southern Nash High School Marching Firebirds lost a very important member of their instructive team, Michael E. Lancaster. Michael E. Lancaster passed away during the summer of 2006. He was often referred to as "L", short of Lancaster. Mr. Lancaster was noted for establishing the Marching Firebirds on the state and national spotlight through the rigorous strive for excellence. During his reign as the Music Director (instrumental) the school consistently placed high in their performing class and sometimes would also have the highest score for the day out-placing bands much larger in size. Under Mr. Lancaster the marching arts for Southern Nash High School developed an idea to follow for smaller groups. This idea was that small groups not only could do well in competitions, but also sound and look great. Mr. Lancaster was and is still highly misses by the thousands of students he taught from the 1990's until his death in 2006.
