On January 1, 2007 Skanderborg municipality was, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007), merged with Galten

, and Hørning
municipalities, along with Voerladegård Parish from Brædstrup municipality
, to form "New Skanderborg Municipality". The former municipality covered an area of 416 km², and had a total population of 49,469 (2005). Its last mayor was Aleksander Aagaard, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party
