Silver Screen Partners
Encyclopedia
Silver Screen Partners, L.P. (Limited Partnership) was organized in June 1983 to provide full financing for and own feature-length theatrical motion pictures
through Walt Disney Pictures
and their subsidiary Touchstone Pictures
. A public offering of units of limited partnership interests was completed in June 1983, which raised $82.8 million. After payment of offering costs and fees, approximately $74 million was available for investment in films.
Silver Screen financed seven films between June 1983 and December 31, 1995, total budgets amounting to approximately $73,800,000. The seven Silver Screen films (the "Films") were: Flashpoint
, released on August 31, 1984; Heaven Help Us
, released on February 8, 1985; Volunteers
, released on August 16, 1985; Sweet Dreams, released on October 2, 1985; Head Office
, released on January 3, 1986; The Hitcher, released on February 21, 1986; and Odd Jobs
, released on March 7, 1986.
The business of Silver Screen Partners was managed by Silver Screen Management, Inc., a Delaware
corporation which was the managing general partner of Silver Screen Partners. Silver Screen Management supervised Silver Screen's investment in each film, monitored the flow of revenues and was responsible for the preparation of reports and tax information to be provided to the Limited Partners.
Three other similar limited partnerships for financing motion pictures (Silver Screen Pictures II, Silver Screen Partners III, and Silver Screen Partners IV) were created before the tax laws that made them possible changed. The last of these limited partnerships terminated at the end of 1998.
By the time Silver Screen Partners was terminated in the end of 1998, Disney decided to work with producer Whitney Houston (she owns Brownhouse Entertainment Group) in 2001, releasing The Princess Diaries in theaters without the assistance of Silver Screen Partners II, III and IV. Same goes for Touchstone Pictures (Stick It, The Last Song and Step Up 3-D - in association with the creative minds behind Twilight, Astro Boy and Bandslam) and Home Box Office (HBO) (their first theatrical release was Kit Kittredge: An American Girl - in association with New Line Cinema, Red OM Films and American Girl) and An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong (produced in association with Sobini Films and American Girl).
