Siemens SD-400
Encyclopedia
The Siemens SD-400 LRV is an electric
light rail vehicle (LRV) locomotive built by Siemens-Duewag AG
. It is powered by four individual Siemens DC-IBGT electric motors with each one developing 200 hp and creating a combined total power output of 800 hp. Electric current is received via an overhead catenary wire
which supplies 750 volt
s into its DC
motors. The unit's frame is also built upon a B-B-B
truck configuration mounted underneath a double-ended articulated body
, which has a seating capacity for 72 people and room for an additional 106 standing passengers.
More than 80 SD-400 units were produced between 1985 and 1993, with all being manufactured at Siemens' primary manufacturing plant at their home base in Germany
. The SD-400 is currently used by two transit operators, the Port Authority of Allegheny County
in Pittsburgh
and MetroLink in St. Louis, Missouri
