Shuangjiangkou Dam
Encyclopedia
The Shuangjiangkou Dam, also referred to as Shuang Jiang Kou, is an under construction embankment dam
Embankment dam
An embankment dam is a massive artificial water barrier. It is typically created by the emplacement and compaction of a complex semi-plastic mound of various compositions of soil, sand, clay and/or rock. It has a semi-permanent waterproof natural covering for its surface, and a dense, waterproof...

. When completed, the 312 metres (1,024 ft) tall dam will be the tallest in the world. Preliminary construction began in 2008 and is expected to be complete in 2012. By April 2011, over 200000000 m³ (261,590,124 cu yd) of material had been excavated from the construction site. The entire construction period is expected to last 10 years.

Design

The Shuangjiangkou Dam, when completed, will be a 312 metres (1,024 ft) (314 metres (1,030 ft) maximum) and 648.66 metres (2,128 ft) long rock-fill dam with a relatively impervious core. The dam's crest width will be 16 metres (52 ft) its elevation 2420 metres (7,940 ft) above sea level. It will have a structural volume of approximately 44000000 cubic metre. The dam will sit at the head of a 39330 square kilometres (15,185 sq mi) drainage basin
