On 18 November 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with Yea
and parts of Eltham

, Euroa
, Healesville
and Whittlesea
into the new Shire of Murrindindi.

Alexandra was first incorporated as a district on 30 June 1868, and became a shire on 3 September 1869.
