Ship Bottom was incorporated as the borough of Ship Bottom-Beach Arlington by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature
on March 3, 1925, from portions of Long Beach Township
, based on the results of a referendum held on May 23, 1925. The borough name was shortened to Ship Bottom in 1947.
Ship Bottom is known as the "gateway to Long Beach Island", as Route 72 provides the sole road access from Manahawkin

There were 664 households out of which 14.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% were married couples
living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.4% were non-families. 35.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.65.
In the borough the population was spread out with 14.8% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 26.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
