Shide is a small settlement on the Isle of Wight
, some of which is considered to be in the Newport
conurbation. Shide Hill House which is the white house near the top of St. George's Lane was the retirement home of Professor John Milne
(1850-1913), inventor of the horizontal pendulum

in Tokyo, Japan. The Isle of Wight County Cricket Ground is just south of Shide.
