Line 5, also known as the Xinmin Line (莘闵线), was opened on November 25, 2003 as the fourth line on the Shanghai Metro
to open. Along with the other "light railway" line, Line 6, it is run by Shanghai Modern Rail Transit Co. Ltd.
Like its name, the line connects the southernmost station of Line 1, Xinzhuang with the Minhang Development Zone
