have been scaring away all the students and teaching staff. The gang smells trouble and decides to investigate.
They eat with Wherlin, Marlen, and Crystal. After dinner, Velma, Daphne, and Fred are in the hall, where Daphne rudely comments on his attraction to Crystal. Fred explains that she does everything so gracefully, then he and Velma make fun of Daphne's kultziness, causing Daphne to call Fred 'Scarf-Boy' (a name which Fred earlier complained everyone calls him).
Later that evening, Madelyn (who has had a crush on Shaggy since she was younger) decides to take Shaggy on a romantic walk to show where the ancient sun-dial of the magician O'Flannery, who was the original owner of the castle, is located. Madelyn explains that the gryphon was originally meant to protect the school. The gryphon soon appears and a chase ensues. As Shaggy, Madelyn, and Scooby flee to safety, a student takes a picture of the gryphon on her cell-phone, which then appears on the morning newspaper the next day. The rest of the students leave, so in order to better understand the case, the gang starts taking classes. Meanwhile, a man named Calvin Curdles, a rich powerful vegetable ice-cream guru, continually offers to buy Whirlen's castle from him although when the gang promises to investigate after suspecting Curdles is behind the Gryphon, he tells Amos to call if he heard anything about the investigation.
After classes, Velma catches Daphne practicing ballet so as to conquer her danger-prone ways and perhaps be more graceful so as to capture Fred's attention back from Crystal. The two then stumble on a secret passageway leading to the attic of the school, where they discover (through an old scrapbook) that Alma Rumblebuns, the school's head custodian/maid, used to date Calvin Curdles. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby accidentally discover the sepecial effects room of the castle, where they are discovered by Ms. Rumblebuns, knock over some containers of chemicals to the floor, and create fog. The room is revealed as Marlen's private laboratory, where he creates holograms and flashy puppets for Whirlen's show. Madelyn then finds a book about the ancient staff of O'Flannery, which is said to control the gryphon. The Gang finds the staff in O'Flannery's grave, but are soon chased by a Banshee
and narrowly escape.
Afterwards, Shaggy and Madelyn sit down and talk, and Shaggy discovers that he likes Madelyn in the same way that she likes him. Not long after, another chase breaks out with the gryphon. As the gang runs into the castle, Shaggy and Scooby bump into the groundskeeper, Amos, and misplace the staff. When Madelyn runs outside to get the real staff, she is kidnapped by the gryphon and taken to the Gryphon's Roost, an ancient dilapidated tower on the campus. Meanwhile it is learned that Amos has been secretly working for Calvin Curdles to try to get Whirlen to sell the castle to Curdles and throughout the movie he summons Curdles to the castle whenever the gryphon causes damage to the castle. Amos summons Curdles to the castle and while the gang goes after Madelyn, Calvin Curdles returns and tries to convince Whirlen to sign a deal for ownership of the castle. Whirlen almost sells the castle to Curdles but before they leave the gang suggests to Curdles and Whirlen to wait before the deal is signed, still believing that Curdles is behind the entire thing, which makes Curdles dismayed.
Shaggy and Scooby gain entrance to the tower through the spear, which is a key, and rescue Madelyn, and, when trying to escape the gryphon, all three manage to end up in its clutches as it flies around the castle. Shaggy tries to get the gryphon to stop by throwing the staff at it, but the staff misses and goes into the sky. Meanwhile Curdles grows impatient and manages to convince Whirlen to sign the deed. Just before Whirlen could sign his signature on the deed to Curdles, the gang returns and warns them about the gryphon. Everybody rushes outside including Curdles. However, the gryphon soon crashes to the ground, where the rest of the gang discover that the gryphon was a giant puppet, controlled from a giant blimp hidden by a fog machine run by Whirlen's brother Marlin. He had discovered that Lord O'Flannery for the Gryphon's Roost had devices in the tower hoping it would make the people think a monster lived there. Marlin believed that with the devices he could scare the trespassers away. He was also behind the banshee, which was only a hologram.
Being tired of doing all of the work for the shows and getting none of the credit for them, Marlen decided to use his own puppets and illusions to become a magical sensation himself, but needed money to start the act, and the only way was to get Whirlen to agree to sell the castle, which Marlin knew he wouldn't do unless he was forced to. So Marlin had his gryphon puppet scare everyone away. Marlen then apologizes for trying to make Whirlen fail, saying that he now knew just how much the school meant to him and didn't want to take away his dream. Whirlen forgives Marlin, and all is well. Velma reveals that Amos discovered Marlon rebuilding the Gryphon when he got curious about why Marlin was going in the tower day and night with lots of boxes. Amos then told Curdles about it afterward. Curdles then reveals how he wanted to buy the castle to win back Alma's heart after having left her to make something of himself so that he would be worthy of her love but instead got distracted by the money he made with his vegetable and meat ice cream cones, and they become a couple again. They also find the staff hidden in the broken blimp, which reveals that the Blimp crashed because the staff when Shaggy threw it hit the blimp when it was disguised in the fog.
The Merlin brothers decide to make Madelyn their apprentice, and soon after, Calvin Curdles sponsors the reopening of the Merlin Brothers' Academy of Magic, where Madelyn performs with Daphne acting as her assistant - which leaves Fred with his mouth hanging open. She appears in the seat beside him, and gently teases him, calling him Scarf-Boy again but in a tender tone. Scooby 'tames' a lion; in reality, the real Scooby is controlling a puppet Scooby, which tames the lion. The movie ends with him saying 'Scooby Dooby Abracadabra Doo!'

Plot
After wrapping up their latest mystery, Velma gets a call from her mother asking her to check on her younger sister Madelyn, who attends a college for stage magicians, where apparently there has been some trouble. The gang agree to help and head off to the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy, located in an old Irish castle. They meet the owner and namesake of the school, Whirlen Merlin, along with his brother Marlen, who acts as cook and butler in the school, and Crystal, Whirlen's former stage assistant. Fred's mouth drops open when he sees her, to Daphne's extreme irritation. From them, the gang learns how sightings of a giant gryphonGriffin
