Sawant ( सावंत ) is the surname of a Maratha
clan among the 96 royal clans of the Kshatriya Cast. Sawant possess commonly used Maratha honorific titles such as Sardar, Raje and Patil and they were active, having a historic presence in Maharashtra, Karnataka( predominantly in Karwar
region ), Baroda, Nagpur, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Goa and other Maratha-dominated regions of India.
Dynasty who Ruled Konkan were ruled by kings such as Khem Sawant and Fond Sawant.
They were prominent Maratha Chiefs under sultanates of the Deccan, supporting the Maratha Empire after its creation.
However, some Sawant resisted the Maratha Empire and believing in their own Jagirs but the Maratha Sardar's suppressed them.
The Sawant clan who was related to the Kings of Maratha and Sardar amongst the 96 Royal clans.
Mourya Sawant and Jhil Sawant were prominent warriors who fought against the Portuguese rule in Goa
