Several ruins bound the edges of the crofts and are a reminder of how many families once lived in the area. The land is of extremely poor condition and supports a few sheep at best. Aerial photography clearly shows that people were better able to grow potatoes on Eilean Hoan in order to supplant their diets. Removed from sheltered glens inland with better grazing for cattle and land for crops, the inhabitants of sangobeg 150 years ago would have faced multiple challenges.There is no shelter for mooring of boats, and the cutting of peats would have required a 5 to 7 mile walk out towards Carbreck. However the nearest harbour at Rispond did have a shop, and there were blacksmiths in Sangomore as well as other merchants such as grocers and bakers.
