The station consists of one side platform
, with a large red brick building in the centre of the station, housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets. A large Metcard
ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting area, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending is also located in the waiting area.
A signal box is located at the Flinders Street
end of the station, whilst a stabling yard
is directly opposite to the station.
A tram service, operated by the Victorian Railways (on 4ft 8 1/2 in. track), ran from Sandringham Railway Station to Black Rock. It opened in 1919 and closed in 1956.
On 9 March 2011 a Siemens
train overshot one of the sidings and crashed into a Bendigo Bank
branch.
