History

The city was founded in 1827 on the location of a ranch. Arrival of the railroad accelerated its development
San Luis achieved municipality status on 19 August 1898.

In 2004, the municipality of San Luis had a population of 88,496. With a total area of 498 km² (192.3 sq mi), it has a population density of 177.7 /km2.
