The San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad is a freight operator on the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway
from San Diego, California
to San Ysidro, California (Blue Line). The SD&IV has been owned and operated by RailAmerica
since 2000; it had been previously owned by RailTex
(which RailAmerica acquired) and operated with the reporting mark SDIV. It previously also operated the Orange Line from San Diego, California
to La Mesa, California
until 2004 when that was acquired by Carrizo Gorge Railway
.
The SDIY has four locomotives although it sometimes utilizes additional locomotives from other RailAmerica shortlines. The railroad interchanges with the BNSF Railway
in San Diego which it's yard is right next door.
The SDIV also stores the Ringling brothers and Barlum and Baliey Circus train for its time in San Diego, helping BNSF.
The railroad's main commodities are petroleum products, agricultural products, and wood pulp. The SDIY hauled around 6,500 carloads in 2008.
