 to recognize the best bands and artists in local music. The awards have been held since 1991 and were originally organized by the city's main local music publication, (formerly called SLAMM), which eventually became the alternative newsweekly San Diego CityBeat

. The awards are now organized by the San Diego Music Foundation. The show is sponsored by a variety of local businesses including Sycuan Resort and Casino and Karl Strauss Brewing Company
