In 1907 Auld sold his whistle making tools, patents, stamps & stock to J Hudson & Co

J Hudson & Co was founded in the 1870s in Birmingham by Joseph Hudson and his brother James Hudson . The company became a manufacturer of whistles and is still active today as Acme Whistles. Acme is the world’s largest and most famous producer of whistles...

. He also sold Hudson the right to use the name "S Auld" on whistles. He was the last maker in a chain of purchases that Hudson made over a period of 10 years.

Whistle Types & Models

Auld was famous for his "Glasgow type police whistle", a robust, heavy, round pea whistle with an elliptic window being identified with his designs and known as Auld's style window. Many of his whistles also included a two hole fipple from hence referred to by collectors as "pig nose" whistles.
  • Auld designed the Glasgow syle escargot-type whistle, a Heavy robust brass whistle made of 6 parts and registered the first patent for this style .

Registered design No 143091 issued January 1890 .
  • Registered Design No 210479 of 1893 is for a double escargot-type whistle incorporating a large escargot-type and a smaller one sharing a common partition.
  • And small number of London style escargot-type with button sides whistles.
  • Both his escargots & rounds were made in various sizes and since his whistles are all scarce or rare, whistles and models attributed to him are still being discovered.
  • Few types of smaller round pea whistle designs.
  • Auld is one of the very few makers that was not making general service type whistles .

Body Stamps

Beside stamps that are related to his patents as The Improved Call and Improve call maker Glasgow, earlier escargots-types of his the stamp Glasgow is curved, on later ones after issuing the registered design the word Glasgow is straight.

Police & railway stamps; 'Glasgow Police Call', 'Lanark Police', 'Lanarkshire Constabulary', 'C.R.' for Cambrian Railway, 'H. R.' and 'L.B.R.' .

Auld had stamped many of his distributors as "Makers", such as: 'J Christie Maker Glasgow', 'J McFarlane Maker Glasgow', 'J Reid Maker Glasgow', 'Burnley Maker Glasgow', 'Beech Maker', 'A Marshall Glasgow' and 'Buck New Gate street'.

After 1907 his stamps appear on Hudson made whistles that were based on his designs which were in demand in the Glasgow area until mid 1920s.
