History

The company, which was registered on 23 September 1985 and has Ofcom

 licence number AL131-2. It then started broadcasting on November 26, 1987. It is coming to an end of the current 12-year licence with the new 5-year licence to take affect from 19 October. The shorter term licence was issued when there was a belief within the regulator Ofcom that analogue(FM) broadcasting was coming to an end and it did not want to licence current FM stations beyond the changeover date to digital.

Programming

SIBC broadcasts a variety of Music and News, 24 hours a day. It has latest local news and weather for Shetland on the hour and sometimes national/international news. It plays mostly 20s music and its coverage area is Shetland, parts of Orkney and 75000 square miles (194,249.1 km²) of sea-lanes, fishing grounds and offshore oil fields. It also has essential information for lost cats/dogs, school closures (also for Shetland Training) and emergencies.
