. It was designed by the Engineer of the province Korneli Tatishev and Municipal Architecht of Tbilisi, Alexander Shimkevich and built in 1879 by Isai Pitoev and Co Trading House for the Georgian Shota Rustaveli theater which was functioning since 1879.

The construction started on February 18, 1898 and was finished on February 7, 1901. The design of the building includes both Baroque

On June 9, 1949 there was a fire and the building was completely burned, except for the main facade

overlooking the Rustaveli Avenue. The building was restored soon after basing the renovation works on available pictures of the building from the past. The building went through another reconstruction in 1982-1987 bringing a newer modern look to the theater. In 2002-2005, the theater was again renovated again with private funding.
