The school is a specialist College in Sports and Science with Maths. It also holds High Performing Specialist School Status as a Leadership Partner school.
Under the BSF scheme the school is about to have a £18m transformation of buildings and site to include a 6 courts new Sports Hall.

History

The school was originally a boys' school before allowing girls and female teachers in the 1970s. The school has since gone on to receive Sports and Science specialist status

, which has involved a rejuvenation of several of the school's . buildings, including a new science building. Its motto motivates students to always work hard and care for others; Be Concerned. its now 2012 and is now being rebuilt. each year has its own PASCO and head of year. the PASCO of year 7 is mrs underwood.
The 1st headmaster was Charles Anson Smith and under his leadership the school was often in the news, most notably for the "Spirit of Leicester" an ex city double decker bus which took pupils initially to parts of europe, unheard of at the time and made the BBC news on a nightly basis, and later around parts of the UK.

Recent visit to India by students

In December 2009,four students got the opportunity to visit Kerala in India. The students stayed for a week and visited a boarding school and they stayed at a hotel for a few days too. The students learnt the differences in lifestyle,culture, communication and education. The students learnt a lot from the experience whilst enjoying themselves too.
