Rudolph Blankenburg was a mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
, from 1911 to 1916.
Blankenburg was born in Hillentrup, Lippe-Detmold (now Lippstadt
), Germany
. He came to the United States in 1865. He married Lucretia M. Longshore (1845-1937), April 18, 1867, who was a prominent women's suffragist, a militant Quaker
and an important reform activist. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He was a successful textile manufacturer.
A Republican, he was elected mayor of Philadelphia on the Keystone-Democratic ticket in 1911. Because of his staunch adherence to progressive reform, he was known as "The Old War Horse of Reform" and "The Dutch Cleanser".
He died in the Germantown
section of Philadelphia.
