In his sophomore year of high school, Day decided to drop out and pursue a career in music. After testing for proficiency, he began teaching guitar lessons and with his first earnings, bought a laptop and a microphone. Nine Sleepless Nights, the album he would create, became the driving force behind a self-funded trip across the U.S.

At the age of 16, Day drove coast to coast playing on street corners, in parks, backyards and living rooms. He rose to the top unsigned artist position on both Myspace and Purevolume's music charts, and sales of his bedroom-recordings skyrocketed.

In 2006, on his 18th birthday, he signed with Epic Records
