The current station is made up of two once-separate stations on opposite sides of South Street. The oldest part of the station (current platforms 2–5) was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway
on 20 June 1839. The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway
station (current platform 1) was opened on 7 June 1893 and originally had two platforms. The two stations were later joined by a footbridge and the former LTSR entrance converted for other use; it is currently a bar.
. It is planned that Crossrail
line 1 will call at Romford in 2018. The station is 12 miles (19.3 km) down line from Liverpool Street.
