In 1992 Córdova began working at the Pichilemu town hall (or Municipality) as Administrative Functionary in the Social Department. From 1996 until 2008 he worked in FOSIS (the Solidarity and Social Investment Fund) as Manager, Supervisor and Local Development Agent for the communes of Pichilemu

Subsequently, between 2001 and 2005, Córdova studied Performance Engineering in Public Management at the Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano.

Political career

In 2000 Roberto Córdova was elected Councillor of Pichilemu, with 938 (14.73%) from the 6,370 total votes. He was re-elected Councillor in 2004, and 2008.

On December 12, 2008, Córdova was elected acting mayor of Pichilemu by a poll of the city's councillors. He replaced Gustavo Parraguez Galarce, who had served as mayor since December 6. The mayor-elect, Marcelo Cabrera, had been unable to assume his duties while under investigation by the local prosecutor on charges of fraud in the Treasury, an affair known as the Boletas Adulteradas case.

On May 18, 2009, Marcelo Cabrera resumed his duties as mayor, and Córdova continued to work as a councillor. However, Cabrera was removed permanently as mayor on August 19, 2009, leaving Pichilemu temporarily without a mayor.

On September 1, 2009, the councillors of Pichilemu elected Roberto Córdova as mayor of the city during a councillors' meeting. He won the election with 4 votes from 6. Patricio Morales
