In 1880 his book 'The Steam Engine and its Inventors' was published.

In 1882 his 'A History of Coal Mining in Great Britain' was printed, with an Introduction and Index being added to the 1969 edition by Baron F. Duckham.. This volume is widely used as a reference book.

A Mining Exhibition was held from 1st - 24th September 1885 at Burnbank Drill Halls, Glasgow

His two volumes of the 'Annals of Coal Mining and the Coal Trade' are frequently referred to by other historians with regard to Steam Engines, Mining and mine disasters and Trade Union movements, etc. Vol. I was originally printed in 1898 and Vol II in 1904, and both were reprinted in 1971.
